Bastille Day Celebrations in Rarotonga

French Flag Bastille

Bastille Day is a widely celebrated event throughout the Cook Islands and nowhere more so than here on Rarotonga. Bastille Day is the French National Day and celebrates the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, an important event in Paris in a violent revolution. Celebrations are held throughout France and across the world, particularly where large communities of French people now reside. Understandably, Bastille Day is widely celebrated in French Polynesia and right here in Rarotonga, locals and tourists celebrate the day by putting up flags as well as eating out at one of two French cafes and restaurants on the island.
