Clean up the World Day is almost upon us as the time of year when people across the globe come together to raise awareness of the volume of waste deposited, both on land and at sea. This community based environmental campaign began 22 years ago, and aims to inspire and empower societies in each corner of the world to clean up and conserve their environment. Here in Rarotonga, we are proud of our support and involvement in the charitable movement.
What happens on Clean up the World Day?
Since the first Clean up the World campaign in 1993, the annual event has gone from strength to strength, attracting backing from both the public and private sector. Subsequently, the improvements achieved due to the efforts of millions of volunteers throughout the world, have been nothing short of astounding. As well as the clean up activities on the day, the campaign helps to build a lasting awareness, which is thought to have made the biggest difference to the global environment. Examples of community-led activities include:
- Recycling & Resource Recovery
- Tree Planting
- Educational Campaigns
- Water Reuse & Conservation
- Fix Up Projects
When is Clean up the World Day?
Clean up the World Day is always held annually in the third week of September; this year’s event will be taking place on the weekend of the 16th-18th September.
What is happening in Rarotonga for Clean up the World Day?
Rarotonga is proud to be involved once again this year; locals and tourists alike are encouraged to join in with the activities taking place. Previous events have seen both the private and public sector come together to pick up the rubbish cluttering up the island, from the sea to the mountains. There has been a long lasting awareness that has been created from Rarotonga’s participation in Clean up the World Day; everyone who attends is urged to practise good rubbish disposal habits at home, which includes:
- Recycling all your rubbish at home
- Putting your sorted rubbish in bins and not plastic bags at the side of the road where dogs can tear them apart
- Take your rubbish home after a family day at the beach
- Never throw rubbish out of your cars or trucks
Clean up the World Day – making a big difference across the globe
Clean up the World Day is a fantastic initiative in which staff from Pacific Resort will be doing their part as we get scour Muri Beach and clean up the lagoon, helping to keep it pristine for locals and visitors alike. We are fortunate to live in such a stunning part of the world – let’s help to keep it that way by ensuring we recycle our rubbish the right way.
