In 1906, the Sisters of Mercy first opened Mater Private Hospital in Brisbane’s North Quay. Fast forward to 2017, Mater now has seven hospitals, multiple healthcare centres, and a world-class medical research institute, as well as pathology and pharmacy businesses. Mater Foundation is the community-based fundraising organisation that supports Mater’s provision of exceptional healthcare, education and investment in leading medical research. One of the major fundraising events the Mater Foundation hosts is “Climb for Cancer,” an event held annually in Brisbane, Australia since 2013. This year’s “Climb for Cancer” event was held on Sunday, 28th May 2017 at the Waterfront Place office building in Brisbane, Australia.
Participants would climb 810 stairs inside a 37 floor building, as individuals or as part of a team, in order to raise funds to support breakthrough cancer research at Mater.
Pacific Resort Hotel Group has been a proud supporter of the Mater Foundation since 2013. This year, our very own Pacific Resort Rarotonga contributed to the foundation by offering a special accommodation offer to all “Climb for Cancer” participants, as well as a 5-night accommodation prize pack for two staying in a Premium Garden Suite at the resort.
The well-deserved recipient of the Pacific Resort Hotel Group prize was Mr. Christopher Hill, who attended the climb representing the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services team (QFES).
It was Chris’ first year competing in the annual event. His decision to take part in the event was triggered when his daughter came home upset from school one day, explaining that her best friend’s mother had been diagnosed with cancer. Chris reflected on how easily he could help raise money and awareness, compared to the struggle of what cancer patients go through. The next day, he was joining the Climb for Cancer QFES team. His advice when it comes to fundraising? To have a wife who knows how to cook! Indeed, his wife Gillian helped raised the majority of their donations by selling her famous cupcakes to their community.
It therefore comes as no surprise that Chris will be taking his beautiful wife Gillian with him to enjoy his prize and some well deserved relaxation at Pacific Resort Rarotonga.
