Meet Aunty Mona: The Heart of Pacific Resort Rarotonga
A Warm Welcome Every Morning
If you’ve ever started your morning with a cheerful Kia Orana from Aunty Mona, you know she is the heart of breakfast at Pacific Resort Rarotonga. Raised in the village of Matavera, Mona Henderson left the Cook Islands at 13 to study in New Zealand. Years later, she returned with her husband, Uncle Kevin, and their sons, bringing back her vibrant personality and love for life.
As Breakfast Maître d’ at Sandals Restaurant and Barefoot Bar, Aunty Mona has become a much-loved presence. Her bright floral head ‘ei (garland) and radiant smile set the tone for each guest’s day. With playful wit, infectious joy, and a welcoming spirit, she has spent more than a decade making visitors feel like part of her extended family.
Life in Paradise
When she’s not brightening mornings, Aunty Mona enjoys rest and time with her grandchildren. “At my young age,” she jokes, “sleeping is important—especially since my day starts before 5am! But being with my grandchildren brings me peace, as long as my children clean up after them!”
Her passion for fitness began by supporting Uncle Kevin in marathons, Ironman events, and training sessions. “My husband’s passion rubbed off on me,” she explains. “Now, I love it too. My whole family, including my sons, are fitness fanatics—it keeps us close and energised.”
She also enjoys cooking: “I like preparing healthy meals for my family, especially when we’re training. They’d better enjoy it!” she laughs. Her enthusiasm extends to her resort colleagues as well. Known as Aunty Flex, she motivates the team through the resort’s Flex + fitness challenge, encouraging everyone to stay active.
Joining Pacific Resort
Becoming part of the Pacific Resort family felt like destiny. Mona recalls, “Years ago, I would walk past Pacific Resort Rarotonga and admire the staff. They looked so proud in their uniforms, creating such a welcoming atmosphere. One day it hit me—I wanted to be part of that team!”
Her dream came true over ten years ago. Today, she still loves her role as much as the first day she put on her uniform. “When returnee guests greet me with ‘Kia Orana Aunty, nice to see you again,’ it makes my day. That connection is the main reason I love my job.” She also treasures the support of her colleagues: “From management to frontline staff, they are my family and some of the best people I’ve ever known.”
Sharing Tradition Through Flowers
“For those who know me, I always wear a head ‘ei to work. It represents Cook Islands culture and makes me feel complete. Guests often ask about it, and I love explaining its meaning.”
A Life of Joy
When asked what brings her happiness, Aunty Mona answers simply: “Seeing our guests happy and enjoying our culture. I love making new connections and keeping old ones alive. Living in paradise is a blessing, and I embrace every moment.”
Aunty Mona embodies the joyful, welcoming spirit of the Cook Islands. Her humour, warmth, and love for people leave lasting impressions on everyone she meets.
