Pacific Resort Aitutaki Launches Coral Restoration Project
Protecting Aitutaki Lagoon
Pacific Resort Aitutaki has launched an ambitious coral restoration project in the lagoon. The initiative engages both the community and guests while restoring and protecting the marine environment for future generations.
Goals and Methods
The project aims to replenish and repopulate Aitutaki’s coral reef, improve reef health, and positively impact the wider ecosystem. To achieve this, the team combines scientific research, innovative techniques, and community involvement. Small coral branches are fixed to blocks and attached to mesh tables submerged in the lagoon. Once established, staff transplant the coral onto existing beds, helping to rebuild vibrant ecosystems and strengthen the reef against future challenges.
Community and Guest Engagement
General Manager Pardeep Kumar expressed gratitude to Richard and Isabella from Aitutaki Marine Research for their expertise. They taught staff and guests how to plant delicate coral and shared valuable insights into marine life. Guests can also participate in coral planting during their stay. The resort keeps a register so visitors can track the progress of the coral they helped plant.
Commitment to Mana Tiaki
Pacific Resort Aitutaki embraces the Cook Islands value of Mana Tiaki, meaning guardianship with a sacred purpose. As custodians of 19 acres of tropical gardens and 1.5 kilometres of beachfront, the resort sees the coral restoration project as part of its commitment to responsible and regenerative tourism. Through these efforts, the team works to rejuvenate, protect, and preserve the natural beauty of Aitutaki Lagoon for generations to come.
