Ani Thompson: A Journey of Leadership, Culture, and Community

Posted on 04/03/2025

For nearly 17 years, Ani Thompson has been an essential part of Pacific Resort Hotel Group. Over this time, she has risen through the ranks to become Regional Manager for Pacific Resort Rarotonga and Te Manava Luxury Villas. Her story highlights determination, lifelong learning, and a genuine drive to uplift those around her.

“My biggest driver has always been my love for my island, my culture, and my people,” Ani reflects. Born and raised in Rarotonga, she carries a deep sense of community, respect, and collaboration. Consequently, these values sit at the heart of her leadership style, ensuring that every team member feels recognised and celebrated.

The Art of Leadership

Ani’s leadership journey was not straightforward. Instead, it evolved through pivotal moments when she stepped beyond her comfort zone. “Key turning points were the moments I stepped outside my comfort zone — whether it was taking on new responsibilities, leading teams through challenging times like cyclones or the pandemic, or embracing opportunities to develop new skills,” she recalls.

Furthermore, her willingness to embrace uncertainty, combined with a passion for hospitality, propelled her from front-line roles into regional leadership. She believes leadership begins with listening and approachability. “A strong leader listens — really listens!” she emphasises. In addition, she shares opportunities, knowledge, and encouragement so that everyone succeeds.

Balancing Career and Family

Ani also understands the challenges of balancing professional and personal life. “It’s definitely a juggling act, and some days are harder than others,” she admits. “I’ve learned to be kind to myself and to accept that balance doesn’t mean perfection.”

Moreover, she encourages other mums to build strong support systems, communicate openly with workplaces, and recognise that asking for help shows strength, not weakness. “Know your worth — but also be prepared to prove it. And just as importantly, support others in return.”

Outside of work, Ani expresses her creativity and culture. For instance, as part of Coco House Bros, a DJ trio, she has performed as DJ Anthom for nearly five years. “I love spending time with my family, I love music, and I love to paint,” she shares. Thus, these passions help her stay grounded.

A Lifelong Love for Learning

Ani believes that learning never stops. “Every day is a chance to grow, to understand more, and to do better,” she says. Consequently, this mindset shapes her leadership and inspires her team to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.

Vision for the Future: Sustainability and Community

Looking ahead, Ani remains committed to sustainability and community well-being. She focuses on eco-friendly practices, supports local businesses, and works to ensure tourism benefits all Cook Islanders. “Hospitality isn’t just about rooms and restaurants; it’s about supporting the community that makes our destination so special,” she explains.

In addition, she motivates her team to take part in community initiatives like beach clean-ups and cultural events. As a result, they strengthen both their pride in their work and their connection to the community.

Authenticity and Culture

Ani draws strength from her cultural values of respect, hospitality, and collective responsibility. “In our culture, we welcome visitors like they are family, and I bring that same mindset to my work,” she says. For her, success is shared, and every individual’s contribution matters. Therefore, she nurtures this sense of family within her teams while supporting personal growth.

Empowering the Next Generation

Ani leads with integrity and urges her team to do the same. To young people, especially women, her advice is simple yet powerful: “Be curious, be resilient, and never be afraid to speak up.”

Recently, she joined the Cook Islands Tourism Corporation Board, where she now helps shape sustainable growth that preserves both culture and environment. At the same time, she advocates for local training and development so that future generations benefit from tourism.

“I hope my legacy is one of empowerment — that I helped create opportunities for others to succeed, nurtured a culture of respect and excellence, and played a part in preserving our beautiful culture and environment for future generations,” Ani reflects.
