Meet Chris Greig – Where Engineering Expertise Meets Hospitality Leadership

Posted on 28/01/2025

Behind the idyllic scenes of Pacific Resort Rarotonga and  Te Manava Luxury Villas & Spa, Chris Greig has a hand in making sure everything runs smoothly. As Regional Engineering Support Specialist, he blends his engineering expertise with behind-the-scenes finesse to keep the resorts operating seamlessly. With over two decades of dedication to the Pacific Resort Hotel Group, Chris is not only an expert in his field but also a cherished leader within the Pacific Resort Hotel Group family.

Originally from Devonport, Auckland, Chris began his career with an engineering apprenticeship that sparked his natural talent for fixing things. “I love my work. I’ve had a knack for fixing things all my life and understanding the mechanics of things,” he shares. After working in Auckland and Australia, his journey led him to the Cook Islands in 1993—a place he now proudly calls home. “It’s my haven. The Cook Islands is the safest, most quiet place I have ever lived, and reminds me of the small towns I’ve lived in most of my life – except this is the tropical version! It’s a peaceful place that feels like home.”

In his role, Chris combines technical expertise, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional guest experiences. His Pacific Resort Hotel Group journey began as Chief Engineer at Pacific Resort Rarotonga, where his problem-solving skills ensured operations ran like clockwork.

A Family Man with a Passion for Restoration
For Chris, family is everything. He is extremely proud of all his adult children and shares, “My wife, Sandy, has me laughing every day—marrying your best friend means the laughs never stop! We keep things fun because laughter really is good for the soul.”

When he’s not busy working his magic at the resorts, Chris loves tinkering with antique mechanical equipment. “Anything older than me,” he jokes. “There’s just something satisfying about bringing vintage pieces back to life—like breathing new energy into the past. I’ve got some amazing heirlooms and treasures that I’ve restored, and they’re pretty special to me.”

But it’s not all grease and gears. Chris has a green thumb too, with a deep appreciation for gardening. “As you get older, you realise how rewarding it is to nurture something and watch it thrive. It’s such a satisfying feeling to look at a flourishing plant and think, ‘Yeah, I did that!”’

The Cook Islands Hidden Treasure
The Cook Islands greatest treasure lies in its people. “It’s in plain view, but the warmth and kindness of Cook Islanders is what is most special,” he explains. Beyond his professional life, Chris is extremely proud to be a Cook Islander, representing his home island of Rakahanga—a pristine, unspoilt atoll in the northern Cook Islands, renowned for its untouched beauty and tranquil landscapes. His connection to this idyllic place shapes his identity and fuels his passion for representing it with pride.

From Passion to Profession
Chris describes his role with Pacific Resort Hotel Group as “the best job I’ve ever had. Love what you do and you never have to work a day in your life.” For him, it’s the supportive environment and strong sense of community that make it so special. “It’s not just a job; it’s a place where I truly belong,” he adds.

With responsibilities that keep him on his toes, there’s never a dull moment. “There’s always something to do, and I love seeing the impact of what we do for our guests. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that what we do makes a difference.” Chris’s blend of passion, skill, and appreciation for his role truly shines through in his work.

A Leader with Wit and Wisdom
Known for his quick wit and infectious humour, Chris keeps things light-hearted while remaining practical and hands-on in his leadership. His supportive, knowledgeable approach has earned him respect as both a mentor and a leader.
