If you’ve ever started your morning with a warm “Kia Orana” from Aunty Mona, you know she’s the heart of our breakfast experience at Pacific Resort Rarotonga. Raised in the village of Matavera, Mona Henderson left the Cook Islands at the age of 13 to continue her education in New Zealand. Years later, she returned to her island home with her husband, Uncle Kevin, and their sons, bringing her love for life and vibrant personality back to Rarotonga.
In her position as the Breakfast Maître d’ at Sandals Restaurant and Barefoot Bar, Aunty Mona has become a cherished presence at the resort. Adding to her signature warmth is her bright and beautiful head ‘ei (flower garland), which she wears with pride each and every day! With her radiant smile, playful wit, strong presence and infectious joy, she has spent over a decade welcoming guests, making them feel like they are part of her own extended family.
Life in Paradise: Relaxing with Family and Staying Active
When she’s not busy brightening guests’ mornings, Aunty Mona enjoys some well-deserved rest and family time. “At my young age,” she jokes, “sleeping is important—especially since my day starts before 5am! But being around my grandchildren is what brings me the most peace, as long as my children clean up their mess!” she laughs.
Passionate about staying active is a love she developed after supporting her husband, Uncle Kevin, in various marathons, Ironman competitions, and training sessions. “My husband’s passion for fitness rubbed off on me,” she shares with a smile. “I started getting involved in his training, and over time, it became something I love too. Now, my family, including my sons, are all fitness fanatics! They were raised in that environment—it’s in the genes! It’s something that keeps us close as a family and energises us.”
Aunty Mona also expressed her love for cooking: “I enjoy making healthy meals for my family, especially when we’re training. It makes us all feel good, and they better enjoy it!” she laughs.
Her enthusiasm for fitness extends to the resort team as well. “I love supporting our staff and encouraging them to get involved in fitness. At our classes, I’m known as Aunty Flex!” she laughs (again). “Recently, I’ve been part of the resort’s Flex + fitness challenge, helping everyone stay strong and active.”
Aunty Mona has a confidence that radiates, shaped by the discipline she’s gained through her active trainings. Her high standards come from a genuine desire to bring out the best in everyone around her, ensuring every experience is memorable and meaningful.
Joining Pacific Resort: A Love for Connection
For Aunty Mona, becoming part of the Pacific Resort family felt like a moment destined to happen. She recalls, “Years ago, I would walk past Pacific Resort Rarotonga, admiring the team. I used to see the staff in their uniforms, and they always looked so happy. The restaurant team especially—they carried themselves with such pride, and the standard was so high. I loved how they made every guest feel special, creating a warm atmosphere that felt like home. One day, while walking past, it hit me—I wanted to be a part of that! The thought of connecting with guests and being part of a team that values culture and service excited me. “Ten years later, I’m still here, loving it just as much as the first day I put that uniform on! When I’m up on the breakfast podium and our returnee guests greet me with ‘Kia Orana Aunty, nice to see you again,’ it really makes my day. It’s the main reason why I love my job—making connections with our guests and welcoming them back.” The team makes this journey special for me too; from management to frontline staff, they are my family and some of the best people I have ever known.”
Showcasing Her Culture: Sharing Tradition Through Flowers
“For those who know me, I always wear a head ‘ei to work. It’s part of who I am and represents our Cook Islands culture that I am proud to share. Guests often ask me about it, and I love explaining its significance. I need to wear a head ‘ei every day; as it makes me feel complete.”
A Life Full of Joy
When asked what makes her happiest in life, her answer is simple: “Seeing our guests happy and enjoying our culture. Making new connections is so important to me and maintaining the ones I have. I’m happy every day—how could you not be, in paradise? living on this island is a blessing. I also find joy in doing what I love. It’s about being unapologetically me and embracing every moment!”
Aunty Mona is a true embodiment of the joyful and strong vibrant spirit of the Cook Islands. She loves life, loves people, and loves sharing the beauty of the Cook Islands with everyone she meets. Her fun, witty humour and infectious laugh is felt by everyone who meets her.
