The Legend of Ina and the Shark
Long ago, a young maiden named Ina lived in the Cook Islands. She was curious, brave, and full of adventure. Ina was the lover of Tinirau, the god of the ocean. She longed to reach his island.
She searched for a way across the ocean. Smaller fish tried to help, but they were too weak. Then a mighty shark offered to carry her across the shimmering sea. During the journey, Ina grew thirsty. The shark lifted his dorsal fin so she could crack open a coconut. Later, in her excitement, she struck another coconut on the shark’s head. The blow hurt him and left a dent.
The shark tried to shake Ina off. Tekea the Great, king of all sharks, rose from the deep and rescued her. He carried her safely to Tinirau’s island. There, she was reunited with her true love. From that day, the mark on the shark’s head became known as Ina’s dent. It remains an enduring part of Cook Islands legend. Today, this mark is shown on the Cook Islands three dollar note.
